Miss Elysa Fraser’s Mausoleum, 1808, James Byres. The old kirkyard of Cluny in deepest Aberdeenshire hides a breath of Roman classicism designed with great assurance and executed with extraordinary precision. Miss Elyza Fraser’s mausoleum, by her friend James Byres, the classical antiquary, of nearby Tonley, is a drum of fine granite ashlar with a moulded base set on a low square podium; it rises to a dome with oculus. The architraved doorpiece is topped by a fine coat of arms between two swags; the frieze is inscribed: ELIZABETH FRASER OF CASTLE FRASER MDCCC VIII. Miss Elyza left
Byers ‘my carriage and best pair of horses’, but his plans to be interred in a similar mausoleum were later revoked.
